|  The Callendar House Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: The Callendar House was the first summer cottage built of brick in Bar Harbor. When this photograph was taken in 2016, the Jackson Lab owned this structure which is located on the Schooner Head Road just outside of Bar Harbor. The history of Bar Harbor is the history of the rich and famous and the story of the Callendar House fits right into this history. The imposing “cottage” was built in 1901 for Mrs. John Callendar Livingston, a member of the prominent and incredibly prosperous Livingston family, by Fredrick Savage. The structure was Savage’s most formal design and also the most expensive (partly because just before it was completed in 1901, the entire building burnt leading to a near complete rebuilding). Savage, himself, was a native of Northeast Harbor and the vast majority of his work consisted of cottages and hotels, showing the rise of Bar Harbor’s place as a “summer colony”. Savage built cottages in many styles including several prominent Queen Anne and Shingle Style structures showcasing the dominant design trends of the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Callendar House, however, can be seen as firmly colonial revival in design and was the first summer “cottage” built with brick. At the time of its construction it was praised by the Bar Harbor Record for both its refinement and its modernity. |  Chronometer from the Rebecca R. Douglas Schooner Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: The photo above and the information that follows is from Andrew Baron of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The ship’s two survivors were rescued on May 2, while the boat went down on April 28 near Cape May New Jersey. Depending on the weather, this means the schooner would likely have sailed out of New York (where its chronometer was calibrated on April 16) on April 26 or 27, only a week and half or so after the chronometer’s certification. I have the ship's marine chronometer (precision ship's clock shown in the photo above) from the Rebecca R. Douglas, well preserved and working, along with a verified vintage calibration certificate (timekeeping accuracy tested, calibrated and certified by an established chronometer firm) dated April 16, 1943, only two weeks before this schooner went down. This would likely have been done in preparation for its last journey. It's a mystery how the clock and its certificate survived when the ship did not. Given the date of the demise of the Rebecca R. Douglas, I can only assume that it had more than one chronometer, leaving one behind in New York and sailing with another. There’s more I want to learn about this however; the need of the navigator to definitely have a chronometer on board, to plot longitude on a north-to-south passage through coastal waters, how long a chronometer would remain with the certifying company after certification, prior to boarding ship, whether a coastal schooner like the RR Douglas would have had more than one chronometer, the prevailing weather at the time of the accident, whether U-boats that were observed off US coasts were in the area at that time, and the names of the two survivors long with the names of those who perished when the schooner went down. This last detail might possibly make the survival of this artifact of some importance to descendants of the victims and survivors. If any of them had young children at that time, they may still be living. This unusual survivor may be all of significance that remains of the tangible material associated with that boat, apart from the photo in your library collections. During wartime every viable old chronometer that could be found was reconditioned and pressed into service for the Navy and Merchant Marine, to augment new ones made to meet the increased demand for navigational aids. When this chronometer, made by Thomas Porthouse, ca. 1850 in London, was assigned to the Rebecca R. Douglas, it was already close to a century old, and yet its accuracy could still be certified for ongoing service at sea. [show more] | |||

Rand, was born to Edward Sprague (II) and Jane Augusta “Jennie” Lathrop Rand on August 22, 1859 in Dedham, Massachusetts. Edward attended the private school of J.P. Hopkinson in Boston and graduated from Harvard in the class of 1881 (Phi Beta Kappa, cum laude) and Harvard Law School in 1884. He married Annie Matilda Crozier, a school teacher, on June 29, 1893 in Boston, Massachusetts. Edward and Annie lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His law office was at 53 State Street, Room 740 in Boston. Edward and Annie Rand lived on the Henry Clay and Henry Seaton Rand estate in the house at 120 Elm Street next door to the main house. He was a member of the Champlain Society. Edward Lothrop Rand died on October 9, 1924. [show more] | |

|  Creation - Tiffany Stained Glass Window depicting Great Head, Mount Desert, Maine Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: In 1922 Louisa Pierpont (Morgan) Satterlee commissioned a stained glass window depicting Great Head, Mount Desert Island, Maine from Louis Comfort Tiffany. She gave it to the Church of the Holy Innocents, Highland Falls, New York, in memory of her father, J.P. Morgan. "The Louis Comfort Tiffany-signed window, entitled "Creation," was installed in the church's chancel in 1922. It was the gift of Louisa in memory of her father. It states the opening to the Benedicite hymn of praise: "O all ye works of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise him and magnify him forever." |  Duck Brook Motor Bridge Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: To get this photo, I waited until late fall after the leaves were gone. I parked at the Holiday Inn which was closed for the season and walked across Route 3 to the metal guard rail along the section of road that crosses Duck Brook. Once in the ravine, I located a spot at the edge of the water that I thought had the clearest view of the bridge, and even from there I could only see two of the three arches. The left and right arches each span 89', but in the photo, the left arch is completely obscured by evergreens. I set up a tripod with a Canon 5D Mark III camera and a Canon 24mm tilt/shift lens. With the camera mounted in landscape orientation, I shifted the lens all the way down to capture the lower part of the scene and all the way up to catch the top of the bridge. Because the ravine was deep in shadow while the inner part of the center arch was in full sunlight, I had to take multiple exposures ranging from a half second to 125th second, which is seven full stops, at f/11 with ISO set to 50. Later in Lightroom and Photoshop, I stitched the lower and upper halves and manually blended the exposures. Note also that I focused on the bridge, but also took a shot focused on the large rock in the foreground and blended-in parts of that image to get more depth of field. - George Soules [show more] | |
