John Howland stands in the water at the foreground, holding the rope at the bow of the boat. Stephen Hopkins is at the stern of the boat taking a turn of the stern rope around a jutting point. Elder William Brewster is on the shore in an attitude of thanksgiving surrounded by Mrs. White holding her infant son, Peregrine, and Mary Chilton.
