|  Schooner Lillian in Southwest Harbor Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: The boathouse just visible over "Lillian's" bowsprit belonged to William Doane Stanley (1855-1932), "Uncle Jimmy." His Chester Clement built passenger launch, "Leader" is on the shore to the right of the boathouse. Jimmy used her to carry summer people in the summer. In the winter he took off the wicker chairs etc. and used her to carry sardines to the factories. |

| Rebecca R. Douglas - Schooner Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: Coasting Schooner “Rebecca R. Douglas” had a raised deck for carrying kiln dried lumber, and later coconuts, for the Baker Extract Company of Philadelphia. The vessel was built for Edwin DeForest Douglas (1845-1911), a packing box manufacturer from Philadelphia, and named for his second wife, Rebecca Rhodes (Ruedi) Douglas (1865-). The schooner was said to be a beautiful, a fine sailor and an easy ship to handle. "May 2, 1943 - Coastal yacht “Alabaster” (Pyc21), directed to the scene by blimp K4, rescues two survivors from the U.S. schooner “Rebecca R. Douglas,” which had gone down on 28 April while on route from New York to Brazil, at 38º17’N, 71º46’W [off of Cape May]. Coast Guard lighthouse tender “Laurel” (WAGL 291) finds only an overturned lifeboat. Remainder of search proves negative." - "The Official Chronology of the U.S. Navy in World War II" by Robert Cressman, Naval Institute Press, 2000, p. 158. The marine chronometer from the vessel was removed from the ship before the ship sunk and is still preserved and in working condition. There was likely a second chronometer that was used on the ship for its last trip before sinking. The chronometer that has survived was made by Thomas Porthouse, ca. 1850 in London. When it was assigned to the Rebecca R. Douglas it was already close to a century old, and yet its accuracy could still be certified for ongoing service at sea. The Indian camps (during the summers) at Indian Lot may be seen over the bowsprit in background. Beyond the foremast a rental building owned by Deacon Henry Clark is visible. The white house at the center was the residence of Henry Clark - built for him in 1871. The large house and barn at the left was the residence of William G. Parker - built for him in about 1868. The building with a dormer was a workshop in Deacon Clark's shipyard. There was an apartment upstairs. "The schooner Palestine, deserted here in Deacon's Harbor, was painted repeatedly by visitors. Behind the hull can be seen the workshops for Deacon Clark's shipyard business and Henry Clark and William Parker Chandlery. High on the hill are the houses of the deacon's children: daughter Ada, her husband William Parker (left), and son Henry. The men of the schooner "Emma" of Swan's Island gathered near the mainmast for a group portrait at Bernard Harbor in the town of Tremont, following a trip to the offshore grounds, c. 1900. Judging from the tubs of trawl along the port rail (center-right), they have been ground fishing. The "Emma" was an 81-ton (n.m.) vessel built at Bath in 1883.
