|  Glass Plate Negative, Mount Desert Rock Great Harbor Maritime Museum Description: A Gloucester fishing schooner sails not far from Mount Desert Rock under partial sail. A number of people are visible on the deck, and a stack of dories can be seen between the masts. A large flag has the name of the vessel, which appears to be two words, though only Frances P. M______ is visible. William H. Bunting has (July 2021) identified this schooner as the Frances P. Mesquita, of Gloucester. Built in Gloucester in 1905, she was owned and commanded by Capt. Joseph Mesquita, and was both a successful fishing and racing vessel. She was sold in 1918 to owners from Newfoundland, and sunk by a U-boat that year. The envelope with this negative reads: No. 7 f., Tower, Single Tenement + Double Tenement, Looking N.W." and is likely an envelope reused from another negative. [show more] | ||

Nautical Almanac 1876 containing tables of sun's declination and equation of time and tide by D. Eggert's sons, 23 pages, annotated by Carrie M. Richardson aboard the schooner Carrie M. Richardson. Recording the sun sightings for navigating voyages using dead reckoning; transatlantic journeys are plotted on nautical chart 1 and possibly others of 2015.315.2076. .) From the Lewis Stanley descendants collection. (See also 2015.316.2077 and 2017.388.2163 Initial review of the annotated Nautical Almanac of 1876 indicates that it records the Carrie M. Richardson's journey east from New York starting June 23, 1876; arriving Seville July 22, and departing Seville August 3. She arrived at Cadiz August 5 and left for Boston August 12. A wonderful addition as Nautical Chart 1 (2017.315.2076) only plots the west to east legs of two 1877 and 1878 Spain-to-Cranberry Isles voyages. Preble; very difficult to decipher, many entries not in chronological order, often several years of entries not made in sequential order. (Only exterior and one page of each ledger scanned. ) A= Black leather journal with leather clasp. Property of William P. Preble, Cranberry Isles. 1862 Boston entries payments to individuals, mentions Schooner Commerce, etc. Letter tucked into this notebook in the pocket in the rear of the notebook. Bangor Dec. 20, 1860 to Wm. P. Preble Esq. from Abner Knowles about a balance of $40 he owes the Town of Cranberry Isles. B= Black leather journal with leather clasp. Property of William P. Preble, Cranberry Isles. No dates. Payments for work in Boston [undated]. Mentions Schooners Express and Sea Flower. Expenses and provisions, individual accounts. Tucked into the rear pocket of this notebook are two receipts make out to William Preble for $18.00 each for 1862 and 1863 pertaining to his handling of the estate of Sans Stanley. C= 1864-1867-1877 (various years) small ledger begins with Schooner Sea Flower expenses. Schooner Quickstep expenses. Includes payments to sailors/fishermen.1872 Preble as highway Surveyor. 1872 and 1873 School Committee expenses. D= 1865 small ledger Wm. P. Preble begins with Accounts of Sales Daily starting November 1 running for several months….“Amount of sales for the year 1866 $5,542.58, tax collected 798.97” Note: One large loose ledger sheet folded and stored inside this small ledger D with header WP Preble to Clark & Parker November 18th 1879 lists supplies and hardware of various kinds. E= 1867-1871 small ledger begins with “Wrecked Schooner”, then Schooner von Buren & Owners, information pertaining to the Owners of Quickstep (fractions of ownership by each man?), herring for E. B. Preble, Esq. Treasurer and Collector of Taxes of the Town of Cranberry Isles, County of Hancock aforesaid. Assessors: A. C. Fernald, J. S. Spurling, and N. S. Spurling. Most pertain to the Schooner Wild Rose provisioning and selling fish in the 1890s at local stores. Initials of Wild Rose fishermen and amounts (or weights) of fish for each fisherman often appear on reverse of these ledger sheets. The Wild Rose was 47.5 ft. built in Boothbay. Owned in 1885 by Willis Bunker. Mentioned in the records of a 1938 hurricane (per gcihs.org/1/photos/ci_notes.html). (See also 2016.332.2095 for Willis Bunker photos; his wife's name was Rosalee.) (A) Packet one: various dates, various years 1893, 1890, 1895 receipts for Wild Rose. Receipts and purchases for provisions of ships from local stores including specific parts of cod fish like 'sounds' i.e., the air bladder of a cod. (B) Packet two: 1895 receipts and purchases. This model was constructed by Merchant Mariner and Bar Harbor storekeeper, Herbert Allen Whitney (1881-1950), and his brother Captain Harold Whitney in 1935-1937. It sailed in Hull's Cove in 1938, survived an apartment fire with only its sails singed, and then was relegated to basement storage for 60 years. In 2011, Phil and Karin Whitney, Mickey Macfarlan, and John French restored the model and christened her, The Islander. Model is loaned to GCIHS by Phil Whitney. [show more] | |
