Touchstones: Sculpture Participating with Place
Description:
"We are touched by what we touch. We are shaped by what we shape. We are enhanced by what we enhance." The Great Work -- Thomas Berry Sculpture invites us to more fully engage with our environment. It helps focus our attention on nature's materials and forms. Sculpture has presence and enlivens a setting. As we interact with sculpture, our senses are heightened and we become more acutely aware of the intricate beauty of our places. -- JL Image: Thin Green Line in granite and moss by Gary Haven Smith Opening Reception Sunday June 12, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Ethel H. A Rare View: Everyday Life on Mount Desert Island, 1860 - 1940 The Raymond Strout Collection Early maps, posters, broadsides, ledgers, letters, wooden signs, handblown glass, bottles, oyster crocks and Soderholtz pots tell a special story of the everyday life of villagers of Mount Desert Island of the nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. On exhibit from July 8 - August 6 Opening reception July 10 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. [show more]

Water Marks/Inside
Description:
Water Marks/Inside July 12 - August 9, 2003 Artists have had a timeless attraction to water's evocative properties. Water's expansiveness and formlessness - its capacity to change, modify, and circulate - have inspired a surprising range of aesthetic responses in different media. Water Marks/Inside features the work of six contemporary artists who investigate and navigate water's prosaic and poetic dimensions, causing us to reconsider our own experiences and associations with this ubiquitous, mysterious constituent of all living matter.
